2011 IDA Congress Taipei

Design at the Edges: 2011 IDA Congress will take place from 24-26 October in Taipei  focusing on five keynote speeches – Biotechnology, Economic Development, International Migration, Internet, and Urbanism – in its morning sessions, with afternoons devoted to dozens of presentations on education, design practice, academic research, and multiculturalism, among other themes.  There Brazilians will join the ranks of distinguished professionals and academics from more than 40 countries:

Curator, journalist and writer Adélia Borges will deliver a lecture presenting recent Latin American projects concerning social innovation, with examples that will bring together product, graphic and interior design from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia.

Designer Fred Gelli will be a panellist on the keynote session “Urbanism – Shaping Cities through Urban Design Strategies” alongside colleagues from Finland, UK and USA, also presenting the design of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 branding, developed by his company Tátil Design de Ideias.

Graphic designer and educator Bruno Porto will be a Category Presenter for the 2011 Adobe Design Achievement Awards ceremony – Porto was a member of the jury of the 2010 ADAA – and a correspondent for Brazilian magazine abcDesign, a Media Partner of the IDA Congress and Icograda.

The International Design Alliance (IDA) is a strategic venture between the international organisations representing industrial design, communication design and interior architecture/design. The alliance was created by its founding partners, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) and the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) in 2003. In 2008, the IDA welcomed the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) to the alliance as the third partner.

Design at the Edges
_ the edge between the design practices and other fields having a stake in design, including: science, technology, government, business and non-governmental humanitarian organisations;
_ the edge between design disciplines, especially industrial, communication and interior architecture/design-what do they share in common and what sets them apart;
_ ‘cutting edge’ work and ideas in design and in other fields: radically new, controversial, experimental, pushing the boundaries of the discipline.

Guaraná Jesus New Can received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Design Strategy Category

Leandro Pierucci, Leonardo Lanzetta, Daylton Almeida, Vanessa Freire, Fabiana Brito, Rodrigo Rabello, Mário Mendonça, Alexandre Coreixas, Roberta Loyola, Márcia Tabajara and Sônia Carolina Batista of Dia Comunicação received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Design Strategy Category for Guaraná Jesus New Can:

The Guarana Jesus soft drink brand is an icon in the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhao. The drink is a local tradition in which Maranhao residents take great pride. Guarana Jesus consumers, sellers and even manufacturers were surveyed to create a marketing strategy which enhances brand identity. The new brand identity and can design were chosen through internet voting and SMS messages, with more than 12,000 votes collected. This marketing initiative generated high mobilization levels and the branding work helped to bring the Maranhao people together by strengthening their traditions. The can design chosen conveys the typical Portuguese colonial tiles found in the state capital city, Sao Luis.

A graphic and web designer from Brazil, Fabio is co-founder of design studio, 3YZ and can also be found at www.abduzeedo.com, a blog recording his ventures through the design world.

Abduzeedo is one of the most inspiring design sites on the internet, with stacks of hands-on tutorials from Sasso himself. If we were feeling trite we’d say it’s proof that every cloud has a silver lining, as Sasso started the site “after I had lost all my stuff when my office was robbed”. But we aren’t, so we won’t.

Leonard Eyer at the Netherlands Photo Museum

Brazil Contemporary is an overview exhibition compiled by the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Netherlands Photo Museum. These three institutions have joined forces to introduce to the general public Brazilian artists, architects, photographers and designers.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents a survey of the contemporary art of Brazil. The work of Hélio Oiticica (1937-1980) occupies pride of place. Oiticica considered that Brazil should not just passively undergo and imitate Western influences, but that artists should transmute these influences into a uniquely Brazilian culture. According to Bregje van Woensel, curator of the exposition at Boijmans, contemporary Brazilian art is characterised by a highly-structured and controlled approach to material and design. The exhibition shows to what extent today’s artists are still under the influence of Oiticica, with works by Ernesto Neto, Rivane Neuenschwander, Cao Guimaraes and Ricardo Bassbaum.

Thanks to the work of Oscar Niemeyer, Lúcio Costa and Roberto Burle Marx, twentieth-century Brazil developed a surprisingly unique urban modernism. It “was sentenced to the future”, as phrased by Paul Meurs, who compiled the exposition on São Paulo in the NAI.

The Netherlands Photo Museum zooms in on the rapidly changing Brazilian visual culture with its mixture of high and low, elitist and populist, artistic and applied. The exhibition shows not only photography, but also other old and new media, television and internet, with an panorama on fashion and graphic design, featuring the work of — among others — Marcelo Martinez and Leonardo Eyer.

The Brazilian Association of Digital Agencies (ABRADI) just finished its first survey, designed to measure the growth of digital agencies in the country. Brazil owns, by far, the largest digital market in Latin America.

The study revealed there are 2,275 digital agencies in Brazil that today gather up an income of $412 million, not counting media-buying investments. As in the United States, there’s a long tail of small digital agencies. Breaking it down, 63.3% of these agencies’ annual revenue is below $650,000; 25.5% is between $650,000 and $2.7 million, and only 10% surpass $2.7 million. César Paz, president of ABRADI, said it is expected that total revenue will exceed $500 million by 2010.
