Bruno R. Padovano, Suzana M. Sacchi Padovano and Alessandro Sacchi Padovano of Padovano Arquitetura em Rede Ltda received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Environments Category:

The urban painting project for the façades of houses and stores in the traditional São Paulo Italian district of Bixiga was developed to meet the requirements of the “Color São Paulo Program”, which is dedicated to preserving the city’s architectural heritage in districts of cultural, historic and commercial interest. The design proposal incorporated the traditional colors of Bixiga – green, white and red from the Italian flag – that were used on house and store facades covering a two block area. The greatest challenge posed by the design was to intervene in an urban context with a strong cultural heritage while taking into account the diversity of interests and preferences among local traders and residents.

Guaraná Jesus New Can received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Design Strategy Category

Leandro Pierucci, Leonardo Lanzetta, Daylton Almeida, Vanessa Freire, Fabiana Brito, Rodrigo Rabello, Mário Mendonça, Alexandre Coreixas, Roberta Loyola, Márcia Tabajara and Sônia Carolina Batista of Dia Comunicação received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Design Strategy Category for Guaraná Jesus New Can:

The Guarana Jesus soft drink brand is an icon in the northeastern Brazilian state of Maranhao. The drink is a local tradition in which Maranhao residents take great pride. Guarana Jesus consumers, sellers and even manufacturers were surveyed to create a marketing strategy which enhances brand identity. The new brand identity and can design were chosen through internet voting and SMS messages, with more than 12,000 votes collected. This marketing initiative generated high mobilization levels and the branding work helped to bring the Maranhao people together by strengthening their traditions. The can design chosen conveys the typical Portuguese colonial tiles found in the state capital city, Sao Luis.

Arriving I expected to find a chaotic, dangerous and gray metropolis. Instead, I was more than surprised to find a colorful, dynamic and vibrant city. These same qualities are uniquely evident in Brazilian design. For those of you who may not know, IDEA/Brazil is the Brazilian version of the IDEA Awards. Now in its third year, IDEA/Brazil is promoted by the design organization Objeto Brasil and led by Joice Joppert Leal, who according to my friend, Helen Walters of BusinessWeek, is “a force of nature.” After a week with Joice, I couldn’t agree more!

In 2008, Brazil made history with 12 award wins in the U.S., a feat never achieved by any South American country. This secured the third position among participants, trailing only the U.S. with 114 podiums, and South Korea with 19. In 2008, the Industrial Designers Society of America ran a new contest in Brazil and some of the winners were included in this year’s Top International Design Excellence Awards. Amazing design and innovation is taking place in Brazil and this slideshow of winners (Brazil placed third behind the US and Korea in the number of IDEA awards in 2008) shows the wide range of activity. We tend to focus on design coming out of China, Korea, India or Japan these days, as well of Europe of course, but Brazil is booming and so is its design. Brazilians are designing sophisticated medical equipment, autos, clothes and jets. São Paulo is home is some great design consultancies that US, European and Asia companies should be tapping (many already are).
