"Brazil: The Cultural Contemporary" at the Royal College of Art

The Royal College of Art in London held on January 21st 2011 the one-day conference Brazil: The Cultural Contemporary, as the result of research undertaken in Brazil in the previous year. According to Wired Magazine, the event aimed to inform a UK-based audience about the country’s visual culture, with a focus on areas of craft, design and social change.

Brazilian design writer and curator Adélia Borges, former director of the Museu da Casa Brasileira and design editor for the newspaper Gazeta Mercantil, presented the keynote lecture on Brazilian contemporary craft and design. Other speakers included Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholar Frederico Duarte, educator Kiki Mazzuchelli, graffiti specialist Tristan Manco, and Cristiana Tejo, coordinator of Education at Fundacão Joaquim Nabuco in Recife.

Luciano Deos to preside Cannes Lions 2011 Design category

Brazilian designer, architect and brand specialist Luciano Deos has been named Jury President for the Design category of the Cannes Lions 2011, the 58th International Festival of Creativity that takes place from 19 to 25 June at Cannes in France.

Founder and president of Brazilian branding agency Gad’ and current president of Abedesign, the Brazilian Association of Design Companies, Deos had won numerous awards at Cannes Lions, New York Festivals and IF Design.

He had previously served in the Cannes Lions Jury, as did other Brazilian professionals such as Fred Gelli, Eco Moliterno, Fábio Fernandes and Alexandre Peralta.

Arriving I expected to find a chaotic, dangerous and gray metropolis. Instead, I was more than surprised to find a colorful, dynamic and vibrant city. These same qualities are uniquely evident in Brazilian design. For those of you who may not know, IDEA/Brazil is the Brazilian version of the IDEA Awards. Now in its third year, IDEA/Brazil is promoted by the design organization Objeto Brasil and led by Joice Joppert Leal, who according to my friend, Helen Walters of BusinessWeek, is “a force of nature.” After a week with Joice, I couldn’t agree more!

This secured the third position among participants, trailing only the U.S. with 114 podiums, and South Korea with 19. NewGraphic #23 and PRO #02

Seems that after publishing the portfolios of illustrator Walter Vasconcelos and graphic designer Kiko Farkas in its bimonthly NewGraphic magazine (20 pages each, in issues #13 – 2007 and #21 – 2009, respectively), the Nanjing Arts Institute decided to make 2010 their ‘Year of Brazil’:

The #23 – April 2010 issue features over 100 projects of books, logos, packages, covers and pages of the famous Gráfica magazine designed by Oswaldo “Miran” Miranda, a “pioneer of Contemporary Graphic Design in Brazil”, as the magazine rightfully calls him in the first of the 20 pages allocated to the renowned Curitiba graphic artist.

In this issue, the publication also initiates a series of six articles that will present portfolios of Brazilian design companies and professionals with different styles and business models. Written and produced by Brazilian designer and educator Bruno Porto, each article will focus a specific theme. The first one, “Pop”, introduces over 80 projects of editorial design studio Laboratório Secreto and design agency Boldº_a design company in another 20 pages. Issue #24 will carry projects by eg.design and Tecnopop addressing “Identity”.

The Nanjing Arts Institute has also designated 42 pages of its new publication PRODESIGN to the Brazilian graphics. Its first two issues feature the illustration works of São Paulo’s (and Barcelona resident) Flavio de Morais and Rio de Janeiro’s Lula Palomanes, as well as the complete projects and texts of the two graphic design exhibitions presented by Bruno Porto in China in 2009, “DINGBATS BRASIL” and “One Year in Posters“. Lacoste Logo by Campana Brothers

Acclaimed Brazilian design duo Fernando and Humberto Campana – creators of the Favela Chair — redesigned the famous Lacoste logo for a special – and rather expensive – 2009 Collector’s Series of polo shirts. The redesigned logo illustrates the way crocodiles congregate in the wetlands of the Pantanal region. The shirts are being featured in Lacoste stores all over the world (pictured here the Nanjing Road store in Shanghai, where a polo shirts costs RMB1,780).

The Brazilian Graphic Designers Association, ADG Brasil – Associação dos Designers Gráficos, founded in 1989, has as its fundamental objectives to promote Brazilian Graphic Design. Acting as a channel between professionals, suppliers, entrepreneurs and the public in general, to affirm the profession’s identity, contributing for the country’s social, cultural and economic development.

At the present moment, ADG Brasil congregates the major offices and the highest regarded graphic designers operating in Brazil, aiming at spreading the profession into the market and developing the design and the professionals.

Under these aspects, ADG Brasil has developed updating events for professionals, displays, contests, and performs a biennial exhibition of graphic design showing the best there was in the Brazilian graphic production during this period of time. The Bienal Brasileira de Design Gráfico is the biggest graphic design event in South America and has been also presented in North America, Europe and Asia.

The Brazilian Graphic Design, due to its qualities, such as having an acknowledged and creative way of communication, local colors and shades, has won ground in the specialized international media, gaining space on the main pages of the German magazine Novum Gebrauschgraphic, the Japanese Idea, the Swiss-American Graphis, Chinese Art and Design and New Graphic magazines, and the American Print, Step by Step, and Communications Arts. And more, it has already been the exclusive subject on Print magazine, number XLI:VI (NY, USA).

From the social performance point of view, ADG Brasil has supported action in favor of divulging and bringing awareness to major social problems, through the organization of contests and the display of posters in support of humanitarian and government institutions, such as Comunidade Solidária (Palácio do Planalto), Incentivo Cultura – Lei de Incentivos Imposto de Renda Pessoa Física, Associação Minha Rua Minha Casa, etc.

REX Design Awarded by Communication Arts Magazine (source: Dexigner)

The design developed for tweens’ books “Leituras Descoladas” collection (“Cool Readings” collection), has rendered another international award for REX Design.

The brazilian design agency has been selected by Communication Arts Magazine among many design agencies around the globe to be on the magazine’s Design Annual 50.

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Communication Arts Magazine is going to release on November-December of this year, a special edition of their well-known Design Annual and their 2009′s jury awarded REX Design’s project of “Leituras Descoladas” book collection to be a part of it.

The agency has stood out as it brings a whole new point-of-view to the early teen’s literature, creating a contemporary language, much more connected to the youth.

“Our idea was to propose a new paradigm of teen literature and a complementary narrative, more adjusted to the visual repertory of current teenagers,” said Gustavo Piqueira, REX’s partner, that together with Samia Jacintho, has illustrated the books.

Alexandre Wollner

Graphic designer Alexandre Wollner will lecture on November 5 at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, during the “Visual Communication” conference. In the lecture — part of the “Distinguished Lecture Series” of the School of Art, Design and Media, Wollner will present his own work and discuss the history of design, its origins, evolution, influences, creative process, practice and principles in the context of Brazilian culture.

Alexandre Wollner is a pioneer of the profession in his country and was a founder of Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial (ESDI).

The School of Art, Design and Media from Nanyang Technological University is located in Nanyang Drive, 81 (Jurong West), Singapore.

Computer Arts Desktop Wallpaper: Adhemas Batista

Brazil’s creative output is currently under the international spotlight. Books are being written, exciting work is being commissioned and reputations are being made. So what’s going on? Has Brazil just been ‘discovered’, or are Brazilian designers doing something different to the rest of the world?

Brazil is South America’s largest economy. It has borders with every other state on the continent bar Chile and Ecuador, its rainforest still harbours tribes of the last indigenous Indians, and back in 2002 it elected Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – one-time shoe-shine boy – as its president.

Brazil is an amazing place, yet we still know it best as the home of football, bikinis and Samba – it must seem a bit unfair to the locals. “Well, we do have a lot of football, girls in bikinis and Samba!” says Danilo Oliveira of graphics co-op Base-V.

Oliveira is from São Paulo, so would the answer be different further inland? Hop north-east to Belo Horizonte and you’ll find designer, typographer and illustrator Eduardo Recife. “People see Brazil as a jungle filled with naked girls,” he says, “but we have a very rich culture.” And when the rest of the world wakes up and smells the coffee, Brazilian design will take centre stage.

Nando Costa, the man behind Die Gestalten Verlag’s Brasil Inspired, spent five years working in the US, which has given him perspective. “As long as people recognise that the country has a lot more to offer, it doesn’t really bother us.”

The world is waking up to Brazilian design. “Lately, with all the hype around Brazilian culture, more and more designers have been working as freelancers, both for the local and the overseas markets,” says Costa.

This is healthy, but it’s leading to the creative equivalent of a brain drain. “More and more professionals are leaving the country, which is really sad,” says Costa. But there is a silver lining: “It’s always really great to have the experience and then later, if they want, they can go back to their home town and help take the market a bit further.”

There are many designers doing just that. Base-V recently completed a giant wall installation in São Paulo, Eduardo Recife has just finished a series of stills for HBO’s ‘Assume the position’; and since last December Nando Costa has been busy working on a series of 30 packaging illustrations for software giant Microsoft.

The rise of street art and graffiti is nowhere more prominent than on the streets of Brazil’s cities. “The influence is big – from fashion to animation,” agrees Oliveira. And even the official art market is beginning to open up: “Spaces and galleries with a specific interest in ‘street language’ are opening, particularly in São Paulo.”

“Brazil is a place of high contrast, and that’s very inspiring for an artist,” says Costa. “Chaos has always been inspiring, but it also instigates more thoughts about what one can do to change poverty, violence and other issues.” Art can make a difference, but as Oliveira points out, “It’s a very hard struggle because artists here have to fight for their space in the market.”

Eight Brazilian design talents you should be keeping your eyes on:
Mariana Bukvic
Based in São Paulo, interactive art director Mariana Bukvic is an example of Brazil’s outward facing designers. She has worked for many prestigious clients such as Nike, Coke and Nestlé, and has been honoured with numerous awards from the Cannes Cyber Lions to the D&AD.

Buraco de Bala
This studio has come a long way since its launch back in 1999 – always striving to develop the best solution within its powers, no matter what technique the team uses in order to accomplish its goals. Buraco de Bala works are mostly fuelled, “by craftsmanship and a special taste for the classic techniques and references.”

reismagos
Reismagos is a graphic design studio created by Alline Luz and Daniel Gizo. Since 2004 the pair have worked on commercial and experimental projects for national and international clients. Although this piece is about the 2006 World Cup, “Now we’re into designer toys – something quite unknown in Brazil,” says Gizo.

Flávio de Almeida Hobo
“My approach is analogical plus digital,” says Flávio de Almeida Hobo. Humans are “analogical beings” using digital tools. “The lack of money spent on projects here makes creativity essential. Less business, respect for nature and do the work with sincerity. Design can save the world.”

Yomar Augusto
Graphic artist Yomar Augusto has been published around the globe. From Brazil to China, The Netherlands to Russia, his work is highly respected. In 2004, Yomar was involved in two Rojo Magazine ArtStorm projects, where 18 artists from all over the world brainstormed a huge project based in Barcelona and Berlin.

Rogério Lionzo
Brazilian designer and illustrator Rogério Lionzo is making the world a better place with the gift of colour and form. The young artist is chuffed with his progress so far: “I am lucky enough to have great experiences and opportunities so far in my career.”

Nitrocorpz
The four founders of Nitrocorpz have been working together since graduating in 1998. “We do interactive media, illustration, print and motion work. Most of our work is done through email/IM.” Other projects include www.mixtape.nitrocorpz.com and www.neuralbrand.org.

Andre Matarazzo
Born in São Paulo, Andre Matarazzo travelled extensively throughout the world for 12 years, got upset with the state of online design in Brazil and decided to move back and launch gringo.nu. He is focused on online branding solutions.

"Corallo Chair", by Humberto and Fernando Campana, 2004

The Museum of Modern Art’s Design Store has been running regionally-sourced collections in their retails shops and online. Currently they’ve got an excellent array of products from Korea, and next up they’ll be bringing work from Brazil.

Spanning time periods, there’s also a mix of old and new, including the classic Mocho Stool from Sergio Rodrigues. The 1954 design interprets the traditional milkmaid’s stool used throughout Brazil, using the same local eucalyptus wood of the original. Representing Brazil’s contemporary national identity, the Campana Brothers‘ keep it modern with their new sushi bowl, a kaleidoscope of colors and materials rolled together in a manner implied by the name.

Playing to Brazil’s strengths, the exclusive collection is heavy on handmade objects that take advantage of indigenous natural resources, such as this centipede-inspired fruit bowl composed of coconut fibers, sugar cane and wood.

The Brazil collection will be available for a limited time via the MoMA Design Store website and brick-and-mortar shop or at MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires).A short preview of the collection follows as a slideshow.

"Dream" by Eduardo Recife

With Brazilian designers and companies like F. Akasaka and Melissa helping to put Brazil on the map for design (not just street art), there’s a lot of talent that’s on the brink of making it big, which is the subject of the exhibit “Brazilian Design Today: Frontiers.”

Interest in Brazil’s arts outside of the traditional cultural symbols is relatively recent, so to celebrate and showcase the variety and contributions of Brazilian design in the 21st century, the show focuses mostly on industrial design but also takes a look at digital mediums.

There are gems aplenty among those 90 picked for the show, from Eduardo Recife‘s handmade cut-and-paste fonts (like “Dream“) and Fernando Prado‘s “Bossa” adjustable lamp.

Also worth checking the pieces of Alexandre Wollner, Claudio Rocha, Tony de Marco, Rogério Duarte, and Tipos do Acaso.

1. THE FAVELA CHAIR
Despite its name – the “shantytown chair” – the Campana brothers‘ Favela Chair became a defining piece of Brazilian design with a price tag to match when it was launched in 2003. Reputedly made out of the same wood used to construct shacks in the ramshackle city districts, this design classic sells for just under $4,000.

2. THE HAVAIANA FLIP FLOP
Invented in 1962 the Havaiana, a rubber flip-flop, spent nearly 40 years as an unremarkable but commonplace component of the Brazilian wardrobe. Suddenly at the end of the 1990s the Havaiana took off as an international fashion accessory worn by top models across the globe such as Naomi Campbell. Havaiana’s international sales are said to be doubling each year. In Rio the lowly Havaiana costs around R$10 (£2). In Europe they have been known to fetch around £100.

3. OSCAR NIEMEYER’S CONGRESS BUILDING
Erected at the end of the 1950s, Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer’s Congresso Nacional, the Congress Building in Brazil’s capital Brasília, remains his most celebrated work, often compared to two white flying saucers. Mixing the sweeping convex and concave lines for which he became famous, the building is one of the most recognisable symbols of Brazilian architecture.

4. THE DENTAL FLOSS BIKINI
Known in South America as fio dental or “dental floss”, the Brazilian bikini is also begrudgingly held up as a design classic, widely embraced on the country’s beaches. The dental floss bikini was not always a unanimity, however. In 1961 president Janio Quadros outlawed the tiny fashion item from Rio’s beaches. He lasted just seven months in power.

5. THE TUTTI FRUTTI HAT
Carmen Miranda, Brazil’s most famous singing export, is to this day one of the defining fashion icons to emerge from Brazil. Born in Portugal, “the lady in the tutti-frutti hat”, as she became known, moved to the US in 1939 where her colourful, fruit-laden costumes became a seminal creation, referenced to this day by Brazilian designers.

Think Brazilian design and the first things that spring to mind may well be plastic flip-flops and minuscule beachwear.

But there is more to Brazilian style than Carmen Miranda‘s fruit basket headgear, and a new generation of Brazilian designers, mostly based in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, are pushing the boundaries of South American fashion, art and architecture.

Inspired by themes as diverse as urban disorder, impoverished sugar cane cutters, the Amazon rainforest and even the gothic movement, Brazil’s young designers are charting new territory and winning accolades the world over.

Dingbats Brazil goes to Venezuela

DINGBATS BRASIL is an exhibition that features the first decade (1996-2006) of Brazil’s production of digital pictorial alphabets – the dingbats – through thirty-five projects by 22 prominent contemporary designers. The fonts can be seen in its +dingbatsbrasil) and related matters (in the dingblog).

The themes of most of the exhibited projects emanate from a broad cultural sphere, and they are carried in a comprehensive bunch of languages and styles – which reflect the diversity of Brazilian contemporary graphic arts. The initiatives of rescuing and registering aspects of Brazilian culture – music, religion, art, sports, culinary and even design itself – could be understood as a premeditate or unintentional way of popularizing the Brazilian-way-of-life through graphic design

Bruno Porto is a graphic designer, educator and consultant from Rio de Janeiro. His work has frequently been awarded and exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia, where he had two solo shows of posters he’d designed. He is one the two Brazilian professionals listed in the Atlas of Contemporary Graphic Design by Harper Collins in 2008. He is a member of the Society of Illustrators of Brazil (SIB) – where he currently serves in its Board of Councilors – and the Brazilian Graphic Designers Association (ADG Brasil) – in which he has acted as a member of its National Board of Directors (2004-2006), Rio de Janeiro Board of Coordinators (2002-2004), Ethics Committee (2009-2011) and as its liaison with Icograda. He has also been deeply involved with the Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial, being President of the Jury of its 7th edition, member of the Curatorial Commission of its 8th edition, and coordinator of the 9th edition’s international tour in Beijing and Shanghai. He has curated a dozen graphic arts exhibitions – such as DINGBATS BRASIL, that has been presented in ten cities across South America and Asia. An author of books and articles on graphic design and illustration, he holds a column in www.DesignBrasil.org.br and has contributed articles to a number of design publications in Brazil and China such as abcDesign, Art & Design, Designe, Design 360º, Design Gráfico, ??? NewGraphic, Prodesign, Revista da ADG, Revista Webdesign and Wide. He was a faculty member at the Graphic Design School of Centro Universitário da Cidade (Rio de Janeiro, 1996-2006) and at the Visual Communication department of Raffles Design Institute (Shanghai, 2006-2010), and consistently organizes and takes part in design events, lectures and juries.

Itamar Medeiros currently lives in Shanghai (China), where he works as Senior User Experience Designer at the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Industry Group of Autodesk® — and helps promote Interaction Design as a local coordinator for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA). Working in the Information Technology industry since 1998, Itamar Medeiros has developed several websites and interactive media campaigns, both as art director and, later, as creative director for several new media agencies in Pernambuco, Brazil. As an Information Design specialist, served as board member of the Brazilian Society of Information Design, and held several lecturing positions, including Lecturer of Hypermedia at the Department of Design of Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Assistant Professor of Cognition and Information Technologies at the Information Systems program of Faculdade Santa Maria,  and Assistant Program Director of the Visual Communication Department of Raffles Design Institute at DongHua University, China. He has been awarded with an MA (with distinction) in Design Practice at Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK) for his thesis “Designing the User Experience: Creating Innovative Design Software Solutions within Collaborative/Distributed Design Environments”.
