"São Paulo's Soccer Museum" by Jair de Souza Design and Fundação Roberto Marinho

Jair de Souza, Daniela Thomas, Felipe Tassara, Mauro Munhoz and Leonel Kaz received the Gold Medal at IDSA’s IDEA 2010 Awards in the Entertainment Category for Museu do Futebol:

São Paulo’s Soccer Museum is a multi-artform project combining architecture, curatorship, museography, art direction, multimedia and visual design. The Museum is situated within Pacaembu Soccer Stadium and tells Brazil’s history through soccer, while contextualizing and identifying this sport as part of the spirit and essence of Brazilian culture. Conceived as a multi-sensorial venue, the museum’s infrastructure is made up of LCD screens, back projection screens, LED panels, glass plates and aluminium, iron, steel and polycarbonate structures. The major curatorial challenge was to create a museum that would be both intelligent and exciting, moving away from the traditional concept of sports museums – no banners, trophies, pennants, soccer players’ shirts and shoes – without changing the stadium’s architecture.

Casa Rex wins HOW 2010 International Design Awards

HOW Magazine, one of the main design publications of the United States (since 1985), has selected the witty Dixie Toga Amazing Holographic Collection of Empty Packs by São Paulo based Casa Rex as a winner of its HOW 2010 International Design Award.

Casa Rex, that has recently opened a London office, had previoulsy received HOW awards for the for the “Saraiva Classics” book collection (Ed. Saraiva) and the graphics for the “Cool Readings” collection (Ed. Biruta).

Arriving I expected to find a chaotic, dangerous and gray metropolis. Instead, I was more than surprised to find a colorful, dynamic and vibrant city. These same qualities are uniquely evident in Brazilian design. For those of you who may not know, IDEA/Brazil is the Brazilian version of the IDEA Awards. Now in its third year, IDEA/Brazil is promoted by the design organization Objeto Brasil and led by Joice Joppert Leal, who according to my friend, Helen Walters of BusinessWeek, is “a force of nature.” After a week with Joice, I couldn’t agree more!

Cecilia Consolo during a guided tour to ADG's 9th Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial exhibition in Shanghai

The Brazilian Graphic Designers Association, ADG Brasil – Associação dos Designers Gráficos, founded in 1989, has as its fundamental objectives to promote Brazilian Graphic Design. Acting as a channel between professionals, suppliers, entrepreneurs and the public in general, to affirm the profession’s identity, contributing for the country’s social, cultural and economic development.

At the present moment, ADG Brasil congregates the major offices and the highest regarded graphic designers operating in Brazil, aiming at spreading the profession into the market and developing the design and the professionals.

Under these aspects, ADG Brasil has developed updating events for professionals, displays, contests, and performs a biennial exhibition of graphic design showing the best there was in the Brazilian graphic production during this period of time. The Bienal Brasileira de Design Gráfico is the biggest graphic design event in South America and has been also presented in North America, Europe and Asia.

The Brazilian Graphic Design, due to its qualities, such as having an acknowledged and creative way of communication, local colors and shades, has won ground in the specialized international media, gaining space on the main pages of the German magazine Novum Gebrauschgraphic, the Japanese Idea, the Swiss-American Graphis, Chinese Art and Design and New Graphic magazines, and the American Print, Step by Step, and Communications Arts. And more, it has already been the exclusive subject on Print magazine, number XLI:VI (NY, USA).

From the social performance point of view, ADG Brasil has supported action in favor of divulging and bringing awareness to major social problems, through the organization of contests and the display of posters in support of humanitarian and government institutions, such as Comunidade Solidária (Palácio do Planalto), Incentivo Cultura – Lei de Incentivos Imposto de Renda Pessoa Física, Associação Minha Rua Minha Casa, etc.

Dingbats Brazil goes to Venezuela

DINGBATS BRASIL is an exhibition that features the first decade (1996-2006) of Brazil’s production of digital pictorial alphabets – the dingbats – through thirty-five projects by 22 prominent contemporary designers. The fonts can be seen in its +dingbatsbrasil) and related matters (in the dingblog).

The themes of most of the exhibited projects emanate from a broad cultural sphere, and they are carried in a comprehensive bunch of languages and styles – which reflect the diversity of Brazilian contemporary graphic arts. The initiatives of rescuing and registering aspects of Brazilian culture – music, religion, art, sports, culinary and even design itself – could be understood as a premeditate or unintentional way of popularizing the Brazilian-way-of-life through graphic design

The Discover the Brazilian Cinema poster exhibition was presented in Art Scene Gallery in Shanghai from June 15-27, 2007 featuring original posters by 30 Brazilian visual artists and 10 Chinese visual communication students.

The exhibition was curated by Billy Bacon and Bruno Porto on the occasion of the 10th Shanghai International Film Festival, which honored Brazil with a special film selection named Mostra Foco Brasil.

This exhibition, accompanying the Focus on Brazil (the Brazilian film exhibition taking place within this week’s tenth Shanghai International Film Festival) is a true visual carnival. The idea was to take forty designers, artists, illustrators, and photographers spanning all generations and regions of Brazil, and ask them to create an original collection of posters for famous Brazilian films. The collection in turn aims to introduce China, a country with an equally distinctive cultural flavor, to the richness and beauty that Brazilian cinema has to offer.

Naturally green and yellow, the colors of the Brazilian flag, are widely incorporated in the designs, which includes interpretations of a projection room light by Shanghai based Itamar Medeiros and São Paulo visual designer André Stolarski. In others, symbols such as classic 1950s 3D effect glasses, tourist sights, film, draft beer glasses, folkloric or movie characters, cameras, and a dragon are all juxtaposed to create a series of reflections on what defines Brazilian film. One of the most arresting design comes from national legend Ziraldo, who has worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, children’s book author, playwright, and talk show host for over 50 years. His poster presents a face with a Mona Lisa smirk and an open eye appearing as the Brazilian flag.

If the sum of all the parts seems to be cobbled together in a rather haphazard fashion, that’s the beauty of it. It’s exactly the mix and clash of colors, ideas, traditions, and artists that makes this collection so striking.
